Hi there! California is back and reopen! Finally, I will have more to write about than just Covid-19 updates.
During this pandemic, I have introduced myself to new surf spots here in Southern California. I love that here you can go surf anytime you want! When I was living in Finland, this wasn’t the case. Every year I waited till it was vacation time and then headed to Portugal. Here I finally can see some improvement in my surfing skills.
Good Surf Spots to get back on your Board
Newport Beach, Blackies
From Blackies you can find a sand bottom and easy waves. It’s also why the place is often very crowded. Finding parking is sometimes a little challenging, but you will find a spot if you keep driving around. I usually use my foam board when we go to Blackies. Paula and I gave names to our Wavestorms. When the waves are small and slow, we take Matti and Teppo for a ride.

Bolsa Chica State Beach
Bolsa is a long and open Surf Spot, with lots of space to surf and waves to share. Spring and early summer usually bring heavy winds and massive waves. This spot is always full of sealife. Last time seal came to say hi, and some dolphins. The only minus is that there are a lot of stingrays. I try to wear my boots and keep my feet out of the ground. Day Pass is $15, so buying an annual day use pass is a good idea if you want to save some money.

Doheny State Beach
This place is one of my favorites! Waves are longboard waves and super chilled. Doheny is always very packed, but you will find your space there earlier you go. The bottom of the sea is full of sharp rocks, so gotta be careful when jumping off your board. The first time I went here, I had the wrong board and needed to stay inside to catch anything and split my toenail in half. Thanks to my husband’s fly tying materials, he was able to glue my toe back together.

On my Surf Spot list for this Summer, I have San Onofre and San Clemente. Who wants to go? (Paula time to come home already, I miss you!)
